Checking the Cat for Health Issues

Posted by

If you own a cat then the first port of call if you suspect health problems should be your vet. They are obviously people with the experience and expertise to help you with any serious problems. However, as an owner you can play a part in the continued welfare of your feline, performing some minor health checks yourself.

You can, for example, check your cat’s ears. There are lots of things that might signify a health problem, for instance if there is a large amount of wax, redness or bleeding or if there is generally a bad odour coming from the orifice.

Your cat’s eyes might be very beautiful but they can also show symptoms of health problems, for instance if your cat’s eye is swollen, red or if there is pus (excuse the pun) then this might be the sign of a problem, such as a bee sting.

You can tell a lot about your cat’s health through the way its breathing. A cat should breathe in a smooth and easy way. If you notice that your cat is wheezing, coughing etc then this might point towards a serious respiratory problem and so you should consult your vet.

If your cat has a nice coat then this is a good sign of rude health. If your cat’s coat is not shiny and healthy then this could be a sign of problems like dehydration.

Whilst your local pet shop might have lots of things to help your pets health, you should consult your vet if you suspect anything serious.
