Skin Problems and Dogs

Dogs, just like humans, can develop all sorts of skin problems. As their skin is usually covered by fur, skin problems can be difficult to diagnose. This is why grooming your pet is essential, as it helps to protect skin from irritation and helps you to identify if there is a problem.

One of the most common causes of skin irritation is the presence of fleas or ticks. There is plenty of medication out there to prevent and treat flea or tick infestation. When you are grooming your pet ensure that you check for the presence of fleas, and for areas of red or irritated skin.

Fleas and ticks might be notorious but they aren’t the only cause of skin irritation in dogs. A poor diet and lack of protein can lead to a condition called nutritional dermatitis. A good diet is key for all sorts of reasons, including prevention of painful skin diseases. Choose quality pet food such as Hills Pets food. Hills Pets also offer a range of pet health advice too.

Another common cause of skin problems in dogs is infectious dermatitis, which is a condition that is caused by infection, by yeast or bacteria for example. Dogs can be very prone to infection, and they don’t have the same standards of hygiene as humans. They can also have open sores which can easily become infected if not sterilized or protected.
