St Alfege, Greenwich

St Alfege, Greenwich

The first of Hawksmoor's London churches to be started, in 1712. The original design had a tower like that of St George-in-the-East but it was not executed. Instead John James added the current tower in 1730. Its curved forms are at odds with Hawksmoor's spare and muscular elevations.

I had originally intended to draw this in November 2010 along with the other churches but restoration precluded me doing so. This sketch was drawn opportunistically en route to Woolwich Arsenal.
